The Holland Preaching Series is made possible by the memorial gifts given in the name of Ray and Lottie Holland. Each fall a guest speaker is invited along with guest musicians. Area churches are invited to share in this worship experience. It is always a spiritual renewal for area followers of Christ.


Doctor Alyce McKenzie
Associate Professor of Homiletics at
Perkins School of Theology

Dr. McKenzie is presently Associate Professor of Homiletics at Perkins School of Theology and is featured teacher and preacher at lay and clergy workshops and conferences around the United States. Her special interests include preaching on biblical wisdom, preaching on the sayings and parables of Jesus, the spiritual life of the preacher and preaching on public, often controversial issues. She has written many articles and books, including Preaching Proverbs: Wisdom for the Pulpit, Preaching Biblical Wisdom in a Self-Help Society, and Hear and Be Wise; Becoming a Teacher and Preacher of Wisdom. Her latest book, published in 2007 is Parables for Today. She is currently at work on two book projects: Novel Preaching: What Preachers Can Learn from Creative Writers and Eleventh Hour Preaching: Preaching in Catastrophes and Controversies. She is co-editor of the journal Homiletic and a member of the Executive Committee of the Methodist Council.
Dr. McKenzie was ordained an elder in 1981 as a member of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. She received her BA in History of Religions from Bryn Mawr College, her Master of Divinity Degree from the Divinity School of Duke University and her Ph.D in Homiletics from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1994.
She has served both associate and senior pastorates of several churches in Central and Easter Pennsylvania. From 1994-1998 she served as Visiting Lecturer in Homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary and as Consultant in Preaching and Worship to pastors of the Central and Eastern Conferences, UMC.
The McKenzie family lives in Allen, Texas , where she, her husband Murry and their three children, Melissa, Rebecca and Matt are active participants at First United Methodist in Allen. She enjoys singing in the choir at First UMC, traveling, hiking and spending time with friends and family. She is a fan of mystery novels and a student of yoga.
